Abyssinian Shorthorned Zebu
Special Characteristics:
Coat colour is mainly white or grey, but there are also some chestnut and roan animals; horns are short to medium; humps are prominent; primarily used for milk (Rege and Tawah, 1999).
Main Location:
Maintained by the Hammer and neighbouring pastoralist tribes in the South Omo zone of southern Ethiopia.
The Hammer cattle of south-western rangelands have supposedly descended from Borana cattle through war and cattle raids from Borana pastoralists hundreds of years ago. But it is not explained how the Hammer now end up small rather than large zebu.
